Banarasi sarees are so much more than they appear to be; they are precious heirlooms crafted with unimaginable skill, steeped in deep history, and oozing with unparalleled beauty. Equally renowned for their intricate zari embroidery and rich silk, they remain a crowd favourite in Indian society, particularly on wedding days. If you own a stunning bridal Banarasi saree or if you've just bought a Banarasi silk saree online, it's important to maintain it so that it remains as beautiful as it is now for years to come.

In this blog post, we will be providing some helpful tips, care wash instructions, and storage tips on how to maintain your beautiful Banarasi silk saree fresh for weddings and other occasions.

What Makes Banarasi Sarees Special?

Developed in Varanasi (Banaras), these sarees are handwoven with pure silk and adorned with gold or silver zari thread. The process takes weeks or even months, so each garment is a unique masterpiece. Banarasi sarees should be handled with care due to their fragile nature and intricate embroidery.

Why Do You Need to Save Your Banarasi Saree?

A Banarasi bridal saree typically represents family tradition and is draped on festive occasions like weddings and festivals too. Adequate care not only keeps the cloth intact in its original form but also protects the emotional and financial value that it holds. With adequate care, your saree will look as stunning as you wore it for the first time, even after decades to follow.

Preservation Tips for Your Banarasi Saree

1. Purchase from Reputable Sellers

When purchasing a Banarasi silk saree online, purchase from reputable sellers that can guarantee authenticity. Authentic Banarasi silk possesses a certain feel and weight that synthetic or machine-made reproductions cannot hope to replicate. Genuine sarees are more durable and respond positively to conservation methods.

2. Limit Frequency of Washing

Banarasi silk sarees are delicate ornaments. Washing them regularly damages the zari work and silk fibres. It is better not to wash them at home but to go for dry cleaning, especially in the case of bridal Banarasi sarees that generally have heavy embroidery.

3. Wash at Home Using Mild Detergents

If you have to wash it yourself, wash it with cold water using a mild, silk-friendly detergent. Do not soak it for more than 10-15 minutes. Rinse it gently-do not twist or wring out the fabric.

4. Ways of Drying to be Adopted

After washing, do not expose it directly to sunlight, as this will make the colours dull and the silk fibres lose their strength. Instead, allow your saree to dry in a shaded, airy place. Either spread it out flat or hang it on a padded hanger to maintain its shape.

5. Iron with Care

While ironing your Banarasi silk saree, apply less heat. It is advisable to wrap the saree in a light cotton cloth before ironing to avoid the zari getting damaged by heat. Never iron with a steam iron as it will create water marks on the silk.

6. Storage is Important

Careful folding: Always fold your Banarasi saree on the lines of the zari to prevent creases that can weaken the fabric.

Use muslin or cotton cloth: Roll your saree in a light material such as muslin to avoid dust and moisture.

Don't use plastic covers: Plastic retains moisture and can ruin the zari and silk in the long term.

Store in a dry, cool place: Steer clear of humidity and sunlight.

Change frequently folds: Change the folds of your saree after every 6-12 months to avoid permanent creases and damage to the fabric.

7. Use Natural Deodorizers

To keep musty odors and insects at bay, use natural deodorizers. Store neem leaves, dried lavender buds, or cloves in your storage area. Avoid mothballs as their chemicals will damage the silk and zari fibres.

Wash Care Guide for Your Banarasi Saree

Dry Clean Only: The safest and recommended alternative.

Home Washing: Wash lightly in cold water with mild detergent if necessary.

Avoid Soaking: Do not soak your saree for extended periods.

No Wringing: Remove water gently without twisting the material.

Drying: Dry flat or hang, but not in sunlight.

Ironing: Iron at low heat and always use a protective cloth between the iron and the saree.
